Emergency Light FAQs
Here are some of the most frequently asked questions for Emergency Light testing which will hopefully clear up some of your concerns.
What is Emergency Light testing?
Emergency light testing is the process of checking that your emergency lighting system works correctly in the event of a mains power failure. It helps ensure escape routes, stairways, corridors, and exit points remain illuminated when normal lighting fails.
How often should Emergency Lights be tested?
Emergency lighting should be checked monthly, with a full annual duration test carried out to confirm that fittings stay illuminated for their rated period, typically 3 hours. This will ensure conformity with BS 5266-1
What happens during an annual Emergency Lighting test?
During the annual test, the mains power supply is simulated as failed so the emergency lights operate on battery power alone. Each fitting is checked to confirm it remains lit for the full required duration and continues to provide adequate coverage.
Do Emergency Light test results need to be recorded?
Yes. All emergency lighting tests should be recorded in a logbook or fire safety record system. This provides evidence that testing has taken place and highlights any defects or remedial works required.
What faults are commonly found during Emergency Light testing?
Common issues include failed batteries, fittings not illuminating, damaged light units, poor light coverage, and lights not lasting for the full test duration. These faults should be addressed as soon as possible.
